He sees the Patriots' young players as the reason, lowering panic levels for Patriot Nation to a minimum, absent a total 2026 collapse.

Indeed, missing the playoffs altogether in 2026 would be a downer. It may even be looked upon as a "massive step in the wrong direction", as Gagnon puts it. Without doubt, after their remarkable Super Bowl run, not making the playoffs would be a letdown.
Yet, how big of a letdown would depend on how precipitously the team falls from 2025's, 14-3 record.
Missing the playoffs wouldn't necessarily be a "massive step in the wrong direction". Yet, missing the playoffs and falling back to a seasonal record significantly under .500 would be.
While nothing in the NFL is a given, the presence of the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets in the AFC East Division is a mitigating factor against a monstrous 2026 slide. Another reason stands out.
The Josh Allen-led Buffalo BIlls will always be an issue. As long as Allen is at the helm, beating Buffalo at all will be a statement win. Beating them again for the AFC East title would be a thunderbolt.
No doubt, Mike Vrabel will concede nothing as he seeks his second straight AFC East crown, Buffalo - or no Buffalo. He also knows he has the one indispensable ingredient to beating any other NFL team: a star quarterback. And his star quarterback is Drake Maye.
Stellar quarterback play is the NFL's great equalizer. Having an MVP-level quarterback like Drake Maye means that you can beat any other team on any given day. Maye is not only a fabulously accurate passer, but his ability to scramble deftly under pressure on broken plays makes him an even more fearsome adversary.
The Bills have Josh Allen, but the Patriots now have a maturing Drake Maye. One thing is certain: as long as they have Maye, there'll be little panic in Foxborough.
