The Patriots needed to address their receiving corps heading into the 2026 offseason, as it was one of the team's weaker parts last year, and the expectation was that they would do so by bringing in new talent and maybe even a blockbuster trade.

Instead, they released Stefon Diggs one year into his contract and signed Romeo Doubs to be his replacement. Other than that, no moves have been made, so they remain connected to some of the remaining free agents, other than being the frontrunner to trade for AJ Brown.

Among the most prominent players left unsigned is Jauan Jennings, who massively improved over the last two years with the 49ers and was projected to be highly sought after this offseason. Except that hasn't happened, and some fans have considered the Patriots bringing him in.

But the latest intel regarding Jennings doesn't paint him in a good light, and it should be a message to New England that he's probably not worth pursuing.

The NFL Draft or a blockbuster trade are the best options for the Patriots to address their receiving corps

In a recent article covering all the happenings in San Francisco, Matt Barrows and Vic Tafur of The Athletic reported a harsh comment from an anonymous head coach about Jennings, who was described as "outplaying his talent."

That's a rough assessment of a player who was looking to continue his career on a team that would give him a bigger role on their offense, and it is certainly something the Patriots should consider before entertaining the idea of signing him.

He clearly wouldn't be the WR1 they are looking for, but from what has been seen, he could be a productive part of a receiver room and help his quarterback move down the field. That's desirable enough.

However, the fact that he remains unsigned and has apparently gained a reputation among those in the NFL as someone who is unlikely to reach a new level in his career, there's reason for pause for Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf, even if they get desperate for receiver help at some point this offseason.

If these comments had never been made, or at least not made public, then there was probably more reason for the team to consider what kind of value Jennings could bring to the table. But this is more than enough to reconsider any prior interest and focus solely on the upcoming draft and any possible trades that might become available.
