Over the last few months, mock drafts have had the Patriots selecting at several different positions with their first-round pick, and that continues just four weeks out from the 2026 Draft. Most recent mocks have focused on them picking a pass rusher, but adding a top wide receiver is becoming more popular.
That's what Jason Abbey of DAZN suggests in his most recent mock draft, with the Patriots taking Omar Cooper Jr. from Indiana at No. 31.
He cites his abilities in the slot as something that will intrigue Josh McDaniels, particularly his potential to fill the void left in Stefon Diggs' departure, which would surely mean trouble for one returning receiver: DeMario Douglas.
Given that he fills that role on the Patriots' offense right now, and we saw how limited his role was during the 2025 season, it would be fair to assume that if they select Cooper in Round 1, Douglas would surely be on his way out before the season begins.
DeMario Douglas' future would be in doubt if the Patriots prioritize wide receiver early in the draft
Mike Vrabel has made his intentions clear with how he wants to build the Patriots' roster. He not only wants to add a younger and cheaper options, but also the explosiveness the team has lacked in recent years, and Cooper Jr. meets those expectations.
He impressed during his final season at Indiana, recording 69 receptions for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns. His 2024 season wasn't too shabby, either, mostly because he led the Big Ten by logging 21.2 yards per reception, proving just how good he could be for a team like New England.
Cooper is also 6-foot-2 and a known red zone target, which is something the Patriots badly needed last season. All of this spells trouble for a player like Douglas, who saw his role minimized last year, and this would only ensure that he would be on the way out.
Although he came alive in moments the offense needed him, he clearly wasn't being used nearly as much as he had been in previous years, as he had once been considered the top target for any Patriots quarterback under center.
With the addition of Romeo Doubs and Mack Hollins, plus the rise of Kayshon Boutte and Kyle Williams, drafting Cooper would immediately put Douglas on the outside looking in and would likely mean the Patriots would hope to use him as a trade chip for more draft capital.
