Mike Vrabel just did something at Patriots practice that Bill Belichick would never

Football season officially arrived on the practice fields outside of Gillette Stadium on Wednesday morning.

And true to form, New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel couldn’t help but stick his nose right in the middle of it.

During Day 1 of joint practices with the Washington Commanders, Vrabel was reportedly among the first to jump in and break up a skirmish on the field. According to Zack Cox of the Boston Herald, the fight broke out after a strong block in pass protection from Patriots rookie TreVeyon Henderson.

Bill Belichick probably would have stayed off to the side, watching with a wry smile during Vrabel’s playing days. True to form, New England’s new leader took a more hands-on approach.

As Patriots wide receiver DeMario Douglas joked with reporters after practice, “(Vrabel) said, ‘You should see the other guy.’”

Mike Vrabel bleeds for this Patriots team — literally

Vrabel came away with a battle scar from Wednesday’s scuffle, but not how you might expect. Per Cox, Vrabel caught some friendly fire in the scrum from rookie left tackle Will Campbell.

Things got heated a couple of times during the practice session, which was predictable when you consider guys like Patriots running back Antonio Gibson and Commanders corner Jonathan Jones were facing a bunch of former teammates. While Vrabel, like most NFL coaches, tries to enforce a strict no-fighting policy in camp, it happens in these settings all the time. The first joint practice of the summer, after weeks of repping against your own teammates, is always ripe for a scuffle or two.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye joked that he thought better about jumping into the fray, so Vrabel is clearly a different breed of head coach.

"Drake Maye arrives and the first question he is asked about is head coach Mike Vrabel getting involved in breaking up a scrum and coming out with a bloody cheek," ESPN's Mike Reiss said of New England's QB. "Maye likes the mentality."

While the comparisons to Belichick will flow throughout his tenure in Foxboro, it’s fun to see the All-Pro linebacker inside of Vrabel come out every now and then.
