At the start of Patriots training camp, Christian Gonzalez quickly put a major concern to rest by suiting up and actively participating in every aspect of practice, ending the ongoing rumor that his contract extension negotiations might lead to a hold-in and remain at a standstill.
Then, once news dropped about the Seahawks reaching a deal with fellow 2023 first-round cornerback Devon Witherspoon, the belief was that a deal would be imminent for Gonzalez. But instead, he mysteriously stopped showing up for training camp, and Mike Vrabel claimed it was due to an undisclosed injury.
Because he didn't receive clarity on that, the continued belief has been that Gonzalez's absence was contract-related. Given how close we are to the start of the season and reports that negotiations aren't going well, concerns have grown about whether the cornerback will return to practice soon enough to be ready for Week 1.
Fortunately, he returned to practice on Monday morning and was said to be a full participant. But that doesn't mean it's good news, at least according to how Vrabel's comments about Gonzalez's availability could be interpreted.

While speaking to reporters ahead of Monday's practice, the head coach was asked about whether Gonzalez would be ready to suit up for Week 1.
Without giving a direct answer, the head coach didn't seem all that confident one way or another, and that is only fueling the anxiety about Gonzalez potentially missing the regular season opener, which would be an utter disaster.

Considering he was the best player on the field against a high-powered Seattle offense, the Patriots would have close to a zero chance of getting a Week 1 win if Gonzalez isn't suited up for the matchup.
Obviously, if he was legitimately injured and won't be 100% by the time the season opener arrives, it's probably best to keep him sidelined, as risking further injury would be far more devastating for the defense than anything else.
But if it was more contract-related, as many believe, hopefully they can handle it before the season begins, which would also avoid a major distraction and the worry that extension talks will be even worse next year.
We won't know until the first game is here, and that's going to feel like a long time away, especially if negotiations continue to stall like they have all offseason.
