The Patriots' 2026 season has not started as planned, with Drake Maye and the offense struggling, injuries piling up across the board, and a schedule likely to make things far worse.

Expectations were high after reaching the Super Bowl last season, and although the season is far from over, as we're only going into Week 4, there is a lot of doom and gloom surrounding the Patriots right now for many valid reasons.

The last thing they need is any rumors of a behind-the-scenes rift between the players and coaches, let alone between their franchise quarterback and their head coach.

Unfortunately for New England, that story has picked up steam over the past few days, with a report from WEEI's The Greg Hill Show making the rounds on Wednesday, which Mike Vrabel then had to address ahead of practice.

With the season going so poorly, people are looking for an explanation for the team's downfall, so it's inevitable that a rumor like this would surface. Not to mention, plenty enjoy kicking a team when they're down, and this falls right in line with that mentality.

However, things can change quickly in the NFL, even relationships, making the potential rift between Maye and Vrabel entirely possible. But fortunately, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Mike Vrabel refutes latest rumor regarding his relationship with Drake Maye

When asked about the latest rumor on Wednesday, Vrabel emphatically shut it down and repeated a point he'd made earlier: Maye was a big reason he wanted to coach the Patriots.

He said that from the beginning, and he continues to emphasize that now, shutting down any whispers about drama between the two as the team struggles in the first month of the season.

This is a sad development to add to an already disappointing season so far. There hasn't been any indication that things are deteriorating between Maye and Vrabel, but this is just what happens when a team isn't playing well.

It's reaching levels of Bill Belichick and Mac Jones near the end of their tenures in New England, and it's so unnecessary.

In fact, these rumors only make things worse if a team isn't good about keeping outside noise out of the locker room. We know Vrabel preaches that, and hopefully they'll stick to that mentality if things keep getting tough.

At this point, there appears to be no reason to worry, as Maye echoed that sentiment while speaking to reporters a few hours after his head coach.

Drake Maye makes it clear that the current rumors are just that; rumors

Because it's apparently the hottest topic in New England right now, Maye had to address the elephant in the room about alleged issues with his head coach after practice on Wednesday.

He made it clear that he appreciates and respects Vrabel and the kind of coach that he is, while also stressing he enjoys playing for him and looks forward to learning more the rest of the season.

Based on their answers, it's fair to believe the rumors are false and that it's time to put them to bed for good. But this is New England, after all, and that's just not how the news cycle works, especially when it involves something as juicy as conflict between a head coach and his quarterback.

Ideally, that would be the end of it, and it wouldn't add to the issues they're dealing with on the field, and presumably the team wouldn't mention it again. The hope is that the media won't either, but if the Patriots fail to beat the Bills on Sunday, it will likely come up again.

The easiest way to shut down this kind of rumor is by winning. That seems to be the magic recipe for anything problematic in professional sports, so the Patriots have a big opportunity coming up on Sunday.

Getting their season back on track and stealing a win in Buffalo against an undefeated Bills team led by MVP frontrunner Josh Allen would be the perfect way to do that and shift the conversation from negativity to optimism.

We just have to hope they can do that this weekend so no more rumors start to make the rounds.
