The Patriots had clear positions to prioritize in the 2026 NFL Draft and needed to select the right players in those key roles, but from what we saw for much of the offseason, they had more questions than answers about their top picks.
That was especially true of second-rounder Gabe Jacas, who missed all of spring and didn't rejoin the team until two days into training camp this summer. He reportedly dealt with an injury that kept him from practicing and took a long time to negotiate his rookie contract.
Concerns grew about how long he would need to catch up with his teammates and whether he would be ready for Week 1, despite how badly the defense needed him and the major hole at defensive line left by Harold Landry's injury.
But over the past two weeks, Jacas has already made a big impact, even if he hasn't been perfect, and it's sparked a lot of excitement about what he could become for this team over the long term.
Even better is hearing the confidence from his teammates, who have sung his praises over the last several weeks, and now we're hearing great reviews from Mike Vrabel, as well, who couldn't have made his future look brighter.

While speaking to reporters after getting their first win of the season last Sunday, the Patriots' head coach was asked about Jacas' development and what kind of player he has been and can be for the team moving forward.
Vrabel was honest in his response, emphasizing how much the rookie cares about perfecting his craft.
"He cares an extreme amount. He comes in early, he stays late. ... The thing about Gabe is he can work through mistakes, and I think that's really critical for any new player trying to improve."
We've heard from other Patriots players that Jacas shows up as early as possible and stays late, so hearing Vrabel say the same thing confirms how much work he's putting in and what kind of player the Patriots have in their next top pass rusher.
That's the kind of work he needs to put in after being away from the team for much of the offseason, but also if he wants to succeed long-term in this league. He has a big opportunity to make a name for himself in New England early, particularly with Landry out and now Dre'Mont Jones potentially sidelined with a shoulder injury.
It's a role Jacas can take over as soon as possible while learning from his seasoned veteran teammates to become a better player sooner than anyone anticipated.
He sounds ready for the opportunity heading into Week 3, and that's the kind of attitude he will need to hold onto for what will be a long, brutal season.

At this point, we don't know Jones' status for Sunday's matchup with the Jaguars. Vrabel has said he will do everything he can to be ready to go, but he left last week's game against the Steelers with a shoulder injury and never returned, so it's far from certain he will suit up in Jacksonville.
Regardless, Jacas is ready for the challenge, and if he is put into a more prominent role, he can hopefully deliver and prove how valuable he can be to this defense.
