Beyond every reason imaginable for why Patriots fans will never let go of the frustration with Bill Belichick and his insistence that the team didn't need Tom Brady as their quarterback anymore is the head coach's lack of urgency to improve the roster when the quarterback was still on the team to make another Super Bowl run.
Although there is an argument to be made that Belichick attempted to upgrade the offense during Brady's final season in New England, trading a second-round pick for a receiver like Mohamed Sanu was far from what anyone was hoping for, especially after Antonio Brown had been signed for their Week 1 matchup.
Because that was short-lived, there was hope more would be done, but it never was, even in the years after Brady departed. And that same optimism continued into the Jerod Mayo era, and once it was clear it wasn't happening, it moved on to Mike Vrabel.
In his first season as the head coach, Stefon Diggs was signed to work with Drake Maye, which was significant, even if he wasn't everyone's first choice. And now, this offseason, a trade for A.J. Brown has made most fans ecstatic, proving the new GM in charge is willing to do whatever it takes to get the caliber of talent the team needs.
So, hearing that a superstar receiver who is considered one of the absolute best in the league might request a trade as soon as next season, there's no reason for Patriots fans to assume the worst anymore.
In fact, there's a good chance that Eliot Wolf will inquire about what it would take to get a deal done, especially if that receiver is 4-time Pro Bowler Justin Jefferson. While it might seem unrealistic at this point, the Vikings have been a far from ideal situation for him over the last few years, and that frustration is predicted to come to a head this fall.
New prediction for the 2026 season suggests the Patriots might have a shot at a bonafide superstar receiver next offseason
In the midst of making 61 predictions ahead of the 2026 NFL season, SB Nation's Jarrett Bailey suggests that Jefferson might grow unhappy in Minnesota after a rough start and a more unclear future of who the starting quarterback will be.
Given that J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray are in the midst of a quarterback battle with no presumed starter and neither of which are considered the most talented, it wouldn't be at all shocking for a superstar like Jefferson to grow tired and want out during his prime playing years.
"After a 3-5 start, culminating with a Monday night loss to the Bills the night before the trade deadline, there are loud whispers that Justin Jefferson may want out of Minnesota.
The trade deadline comes and goes without him being moved, but the narrative for the remainder of the season is if this will be the last year of Jefferson in a Vikings uniform."
At this point in time, it would seem unlikely that the Vikings would even slightly consider moving on from a generational superstar like Jefferson, but given the kind of return they could get in a trade, particularly if they still don't have a franchise quarterback, they might be far more willing than not to seriously consider it.
The NFL has been full of blockbuster trades recently, with teams moving on from players presumed to be pillars of their franchises, such as the Browns trading Myles Garrett to the Rams earlier this summer.
So the idea that Jefferson couldn't possibly be traded is out the window, and that means the Patriots could finally get the top-tier receiver they have long needed, even if they do have Brown leading the way right now.
The chance of having Brown and Jefferson lining up on game day almost sounds too good to be true, and obviously, it would take a lot for the Vikings to agree to a trade, but the Patriots should be willing to give up whatever it takes to get the receiver in the door.
He has shown absolutely no sign of slowing down at 27 years old while recording his sixth straight 1,000+ yard season in 2025, so Vrabel and Wolf would be foolish not to inquire and make a real push to get him on the team, especially when Maye is on track to become one of the top-5 quarterbacks in the league.
If there are any whispers about the possibility that Jefferson will be on the trade block this upcoming season, as Bailey suggests, then they'll have to start determining what they're willing to do to make a deal happen, and that's something exciting for Patriots fans to look forward to.
