One of the weakest positions on the Patriots' roster in recent years has been tight end, with Hunter Henry as the only mainstay since he signed in 2021. It has been a struggle for the multiple coaching staffs to find a reliable player to pair with the veteran, and they run into that same issue this offseason.

Henry is under contract for one more year, and we've already seen Austin Hooper depart for the Falcons. So prioritizing the position is a must.

In free agency so far, Mike Vrabel and Co. have signed a fullback to help on the offensive line, along with a blocking tight end, which creates an opportunity to pursue more of a pass-catcher, and that could mean David Njoku becomes an option now.

The almost 30-year-old has proven to be a versatile weapon at the position, as he has served predominantly as a blocker for the Browns one year, and more of a receiver the next. That's the kind of player the Patriots could benefit from, especially now that they have added some reinforcements to help on the line.

The path to the Patriots signing veteran tight end David Njoku just became clear

Although the incoming tight end class is reportedly filled with impressive talent, it would be wise for the Patriots to bring in another veteran who could immediately make an impact for the offense, and that is something Njoku would inevitably provide.

His 2025 season was not the most memorable, since it was statistically his worst since the 2020 season. However, he spent most of the season blocking on the line for a young and developing Browns offense, proving his value beyond the receiving game.

The season before that, though, Njoku was much more involved in the offensive game plan, and in 2023, he logged the best season of his career by recording 81 receptions on 123 targets for 882 yards and six touchdowns.

He could be the ideal addition to work with Henry and allow Josh McDaniels to open his infamous playbook to reuse some fan-favorite double-tight-end sets New England became known for in the 2010s.

That is something their offense has long been missing, and if they really want to ensure Maye is surrounded with the best possible talent, Njoku might be the right guy for the job.
