The New England Patriots are grinding their way through the 2026 offseason, while top teams are built by adding talent. Whatever one thinks of how their free agency has unfolded, the important second leg of the offseason will begin on April 30 with the NFL draft.
Last offseason's biggest free agency splash was on defensive tackle Milton Williams, and he proved to be well worth the money. Now, SI.com's Ethan Hurwitz has heard that Williams wants more of a leadership role on the team in 2026.
Whether he wanted to or not, Williams was a leader based on his salary. Yet, it's still refreshing to see a younger veteran willing to step up and not only lead his own unit, the defensive line, but also be vocal about his willingness to assume a role as one of the defense's overall leaders.
Linebacker Robert Spillane was one last season. Recently signed All-Pro safety Kevin Byard III will be looked upon as a leader in the secondary. Hopefully, star cornerback Christian Gonzalez will also assume that role, as he should be receiving a contract extension sooner rather than later if Mike Vrabel and the Patriots are astute enough.
Regardless, Williams will now take his place as a pace-setter on the D-line and defense generally.
Milton Williams will step up as a Patriots' defensive leader in 2026
Milton Williams' making it clear that he's ready to step up into a more vigorous leadership role is a great signal for the team and Patriot Nation. He's one of the team's best players, their best defensive lineman, and a leader, which is exactly what he should be.
Ethan Hurwitz of SI.com quoted Williams' desire to assume a more prominent leadership role in the Patriots' 2026 defense at a speaking event at The Track at New Balance.
"I'm not too talkative. I'm more lead by example. You know, they brought me here for a reason and I just show up every day ready to work... A lot of the young guys looking up to me, even some of the veterans...When I first came in, some of the players were like, 'Man, we've never been to the playoffs, we've never been to the Super Bowl. What is it like? What do we gotta do to get there?' My message is every day consistently showing up.
Obviously coming into this organization ... you see the Super Bowl rings when you walk into the building. You see the trophies everywhere throughout the building. It's a standard that you want to (uphold)."
Coach Vrabel will be thrilled to hear that Williams wants to raise his leadership profile in 2026. The Patriots will face a far more difficult schedule than they did in 2025 as Divisional winners.
They'll need to be better, both talent-wise and attitude-wise, to meet and overcome these challenges. It's nice to see Milton Williams' vocal willingness to take some of that burden on defense on his own shoulders. The Patriots will need all the leadership they can get in 2026.
