Since being drafted by the Patriots in 2024, quarterback Drake Maye has had more than his fair share of coverage regarding what kind of quarterback he is and will be long-term in the NFL. Although he wasn't considered one of the top two prospects of his class, he's already proven that analysts might have been mistaken, as he has already led his team to the Super Bowl in Year 2.
Expectations have reached a new high going into the 2026 season, especially since he was the runner-up for MVP last year, falling only behind 17-year veteran Matthew Stafford, and his new teammates are continuing to hype him up in a way that should frighten their biggest rivals.
In fact, former Bills playmaker and fullback Reggie Gilliam just compared Maye to his former quarterback again, becoming the latest player or analyst to put Josh Allen and Maye's name in the same sentence.
Those are big shoes to fill, but considering Gilliam played with Allen for six years, it's fair to assume he knows what he's talking about. And now, he's adding even more excitement to what his new quarterback can do this fall.
The big-time comps to some of the best quarterbacks aren't stopping for Drake Maye
In the first episode of Forged in Foxborough, the newest Patriot spoke highly of Maye and shared his initial thoughts upon meeting him for the first time.
Not only was he shocked by his size, but he also praised him for the kind of player he is, noting that he'd previously been compared to Allen, and he gave his stamp of approval to that comparison despite not having even played with Maye yet.
That says a lot.
“I didn’t expect him to be as tall and as broad as he is. I thought he was a scrawny guy, but no, he’s actually pretty big. I know he had a lot of comparisons to Josh this past season in the MVP race, and, you know, his development as a player, and I believe him. It seems right the way he's going."
Because they are of similar stature and are quarterbacks that utilize their legs far more than others across the league, it was inevitable that Allen and Maye would be compared the second the Patriots drafted their new quarterback.
It's only heightened because they're in the same division, so the connection between the two will likely not end as long as both the Bills and Patriots are competing for division and Super Bowl titles.
Considering Allen is arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the league, the fact that Maye is already being mentioned in the same category shows just how much of an impact he's made in such a short amount of time, with Gilliam's impression of him being the latest example.
On top of that, it's clear that most believe he has a high ceiling in the league, which is exactly what the Patriots were hoping for. Now he just needs to deliver on the hype, particularly after the impressive season he just had, and continue on his upward trajectory to become more of a household name that teams around the league fear.
