One of the best parts of the Patriots' defense over the last few years has been their secondary, led by some high-performing cornerbacks and safeties, which was expected to continue throughout the 2024 season. With Christian Gonzalez back in the lineup after suffering a season-ending injury as a rookie after just three games to Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers leading the safeties, the Patriots had all the makings of a shutdown group to intimidate opposing receivers.

That hasn't been the case so far, except for Gonzalez and a few good performances from other cornerbacks. Peppers was on his way to continuing his impactful mark on the defense this year, only to get into legal trouble and be placed on the Commissioner's exempt list a few months ago.

His absence took a toll on the secondary, which became even more questionable when Dugger dealt with an ankle injury and missed a few games. It was unclear when Peppers would return this season, or ever, but that changed last week when the league reinstated him ahead of this week's matchup.

It was the first time the veteran had been allowed back in the building since October, and he returned to practice immediately after the announcement was made, meaning he could return to the field this week if the Patriots coaching staff believes he's good to go.

At this point in time, he's considered questionable to suit up against the Colts. However, there's little reason to believe he won't participate in this game, especially after how the defense has performed in recent weeks. His leadership and production are much-needed this season, and if the team believes that, too, then there's no reason for Peppers to remain sidelined.

However, this could be the last few games we see him in New England, as he has a court date set in January to resolve his legal matter. Depending on the outcome of that trial, he might not be a Patriot beyond the 2024 season, as Robert Kraft has already made very clear.
