The Patriots went into the 2026 offseason fortunate that the majority of their roster were not dealing with any serious injuries that would keep them off the practice field this spring. It meant expectations were even higher once they returned to Foxboro after a Super Bowl appearance, and there was a lot of excitement about what the group could do heading into a new year.
That was particularly true for the offense, even well before the trade for A.J. Brown became official, and among the most exciting was tight end Julian Hill, who seemingly joined the team with a future role as a blocker on the offensive line.
There was a chance Josh McDaniels would test the waters with Hill as a receiver, despite him not having done that much throughout his career, but that opportunity was quickly ended when it was announced he suffered a season-ending injury at a practice a few weeks ago.
It is a major hit to their offensive game plan, and although they haven't stated what the injury was, we do know that he won't suit up with the team in 2026.
The only clarity we received on the situation came from Hunter Henry, who spoke to reporters after minicamp this week and seemed to suggest that Hill's injury was a lot worse than anyone anticipated.
Hunter Henry implies that Julian Hill's injury might be similar to one he suffered years ago
He might not have explicitly said what Hill's injury was, but Henry's immediate comparison to when he tore his ACL in 2018 suggested his new teammate had suffered something similar recently, further proving that his injury is, in fact, much worse than we knew.
Asked about Julian Hill, who suffered a season-ending injury last week, Hunter Henry said he went through something similar when he suffered a torn ACL in OTAs back in 2018.

Obviously, knowing that he was placed on injured reserve and that meant his season was over, his injury would have to be serious.
But sometimes teams do that to make room on the roster for other players instead, and in New England, it has been referred to as the "Foxborough Flu," and there was some speculation that Hill was the latest to join that club.
Based on what Henry had to say, that doesn't appear to be the case, which is good considering how much money they signed him to and the impact he was expected to have on the offense.
It's an unfortunate situation all around, but hopefully, he will still be a strong presence in the locker room, since Mike Vrabel spoke so highly of him already, and he can certainly help the tight end room with his knowledge if he's able to be around.
