The New England Patriots are set to take on the New York Giants on Monday Night Football, in their final primetime game of the 2025 season, at least, until the playoffs, of course. It's expected to be a tough battle, despite their opponents coming to Foxboro with a 2-10 record, mainly because of the injuries the Patriots are dealing with.
The loss of starting linemen Will Campbell and Jared Wilson will hit the offense hard, but the hope is that their replacements have enough experience working with Drake Maye that the transition will be easy and won't disrupt their production too much.
That will be even more the case against a dominant defensive line like the Giants, with three stars ready to get their hands on the Patriots' quarterback and continue their impressive streak of bringing pressure.
And based on what Brian Burns had to say in the days leading up to the game, he certainly seems to know what kind of player Maye is and is ready to take him down.
Brian Burns had a lot to say about the rise of Drake Maye ahead of their Week 13 matchup
While speaking to reporters about their upcoming matchup against the Patriots and one of the league favorites for MVP, Burns talked about how poised Maye is, and how that could become a detriment to his performance.
Maye responded, confused by what the pass rusher meant, which is fair because it's unclear what exactly he meant, and based on his follow-up, it seems Burns is banking on Maye making mistakes by overlooking the defensive line and maybe even holding onto the football too long.
#Patriots QB Drake Maye on Brian Burns saying he was “too poised” in the pocket:

“Not 100% [sure] what that really means. I try to keep my eyes down the field while feeling pressure, I think that’s part of playing the position… I know he’s a great player...”

Burns comes into this game with 13 sacks and 21 quarterback hits, with plans to add to that against a quarterback who has already been sacked 37 times in 12 games. He might have an easy time doing that this week, with Campbell and Wilson sidelined, which is not great news for New England.
That will be even more attainable if his insight into Maye is accurate on Monday night, but for the Patriots' sake, let's hope it's not, and Burns' comments will come back to haunt him.
If Maye can overcome the obstacle ahead of him, he will further increase his chances to win MVP, especially after the fall from grace Matthew Stafford had on Sunday, in a big-time loss to the Panthers, where he threw two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six, and was strip-sacked.
A solid game against a tough defensive front, down two starting linemen, and no mistakes would certainly help lock that up for the 23-year-old.
