The New England Patriots and Mike Vrabel are on a mission in the 2026 offseason. He came close to securing the ultimate prize, the Lombardi Trophy, in 2025, with a Cinderella-like season that, unfortunately, turned into a fantasy pumpkin one game too early.
Now, Vrabel is onto Phase II of his rebuild, and one analyst has suggested some free agents connected to Vrabel or his staff who may make sense to sign. One indeed does. It's Tennessee's tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo.
The Patriots' 2026 offseason primary needs are no secret. The Seahawks trounced the Patriots, and two deficient units stood out. They were the offensive line that surrendered six sacks, and the edge players, who didn't produce any. Both have to be remodeled this offseason.
Additionally, there are other positions that need attention, such as running back and tight end. It's a sneaky need that Vrabel and his personnel team will neglect to address this offseason at his and the team's peril. The need is there, and remediation is essential.
MIke Vrabel needs to revamp his tight end room with younger players
The Patriots' top two 2025 tight ends were both 30-year-old veterans, Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper. Henry will likely be back, but Hooper is a free agent and may not be. In that scenario, behind Henry is basically no one. It's an issue that Vrabel must devote resources to address.
Mark Daniels of MassLive has suggested free agents connected to Mike Vrabel and his staff who might be of interest to the Patriots. One tight end he notes would make perfect sense: Chigoziem Okonkwo.
"Okonkwo was drafted by the Titans when Vrabel was the head coach in 2022. His first offensive coordinator was Patriots receivers coach Todd Downing. Last season, Okonkwo caught 56 passes for 560 yards with two touchdowns for Tennessee.
At 26, he’s in the prime of his career. With Austin Hooper a free agent, the Patriots could add youth and more depth to their tight end position behind Hunter Henry."
Okonkwo has all the credentials to be a nice addition to the 2026 Patriots. He's young at 26, and he has a track record of catching the ball. He was also drafted by Vrabel in Tennessee, so he obviously would have an affinity for the player. Many of the dots connect.
Patriots' Signing tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo and drafting a tight end is a sound strategy
Tight end in the NFL is an overlooked and underrated position. They act as pass catchers some of the time, but dwell in the trenches much of the rest. Seldom does a Rob Gronkowski, Travis Kelce, or Brock Bowers come along who can be a monster offensive weapon for any team.
For the 2026 Patriots, it's unlikely that a monster receiving tight end will materialize. The challenge for Mike Vrabel and company will be to find a second tight end to backup Hunter Henry and be a viable receiving option for Drake Maye.
Hooper will likely be gone, and adding a young veteran presence, along with a promising draftee, is advisable.
Okonkwo is a smaller tight end at 6'3" and 238 pounds. He's clearly going to be a receiving target for Maye. Yet his consistent production over the past three years of catching over 50 passes for more than 500 yards can't be downplayed. Those are solid statistics for a second tight end, especially for one who spent two years with Vrabel in Tennessee.
Vrabel has major free-agency and/or draft needs on the offensive line and at edge on defense. He may draft a tight end somewhere along the way, and if the opportunity presents itself early, he may take it.
Regardless, signing a young veteran like Okonkwo would be a solid move to provide an immediate second tight end to complement Henry if Hooper leaves and solidify the position in the short term. It would be an astute signing by Vrabel and he seldom does anything but.
