The New England Patriots have made many changes to their roster over the last few years, as they have undergone a rebuilding phase to build a championship-ready team after spending too many years at the bottom of the league.

They lost a list of notable players through trades and difficult roster cuts, many of whom fans weren't thrilled to see leave, and one of those players has continued to be quarterback Joe Milton, whom Eliot Wolf traded to the Cowboys during the 2025 offseason.

He was drafted in the sixth round just one year before, which was an immediately questioned move considering they selected Drake Maye with the third-overall pick, and that inevitably led to him being moved to a team that may give him a better shot at taking the field far more.

He was reportedly excited about moving to Dallas, viewing their quarterback situation as a better opportunity to get more starts despite Dak Prescott being their franchise star. But things haven't gone so well over the past year and a half, and now the third-year quarterback is already facing an uncertain future in Dallas.

Joe Milton's future with the Cowboys takes a major hit ahead of the 2026 season

Although he reportedly wanted to be traded to the Cowboys, Milton's future as a starter in the NFL looked grim, mostly because he struggled with accuracy despite his natural athleticism and ability to throw an impressive deep ball.

He appeared destined to be a backup, which would begin with the Cowboys, and his 2025 preseason performance made that even more certain.

Fortunately for Dallas, Prescott played all 17 games last season, so Milton wasn't needed, and despite all the reasons they were interested in trading for him, the team has made it clear that they're not completely on board with keeping Milton as their QB2, as they have since added Sam Howell to compete with him for that role.

Based on all accounts from the offseason thus far, it's not going well for the former Patriot, and it's going to be an uphill battle to oust the former 2022 draft pick, even if he hasn't been on an NFL team since the 2024 season.

It's far from what anyone imagined Milton's career would look like just going into his third season, but it's exactly why he fell to the sixth round and why every team passed over him. He's clearly talented and has the tools to be a fine NFL quarterback, but his ceiling is probably a backup, and right now it looks like his stock is falling to QB3.
