ESPN believes the Patriots have the core to start NFL’s next dynasty

Crushing loss to Seattle doesn't diminish the team's potential to dominate

The New England Patriots' 2025 NFL season came crashing down with a thud as they were manhandled by the Seattle Seahawks 29-13 in a one-sided thumping. From start to finish, it was no contest as the Cinderella-like Patriots' carriage turned into a pumpkin well before midnight on February 8. Mike Vrabel's magic wand sank into the lake, as did Drake Maye's King Arthur imitation. Yet, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN still thinks that the Drake Maye-led Patriots can still build a dynasty.

In the Super Bowl, the Patriots had no answers for anything Seattle's fine Head Coach Mike Macdonald and his staff could muster as the Patriots were thoroughly manhandled in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Especially lackluster was the non-offense dialed up by Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels. His vanilla offense finally caught up to the team as they were held scoreless until the fourth quarter. Maye's injured shoulder was a factor, whether they'll admit it or not.

Regardless, the Patriots made it to the Super Bowl and handed Patriot Nation a great, and wholely unexpected ride in 2025. For that, Vrabel and company should be commended. Now, 2025 is history. Vrabel still has a lot of roster rebuilding to do, and two major areas are central to the ongoing revamping. But the future is bright, as ESPN noted, and we're on to Year 2 of the rebuild.

The Patriots have key ingredients to a sustained success story

While ESPN's experts nailed their Super Bowl predictions with a solid 11-for-11, correctly picking Seattle, one of their analysts is still bullish on the possibility of a new Patriots' dynasty created and led by Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye. At least that's some salve for the wounds of a battered Patriot Nation.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler sees a bright future for the Drake Maye-led Patriots going forward despite the drubbing at the hands of the Seahawks.

"Storybook endings are rare, and Maye's story is nowhere near its end. Maye's presence -- coupled with a storied, championship-driven organization, the Coach of the Year and a much-improved Patriots roster -- highlights the optimism and the trappings of a Super Bowl run for a 23-year-old quarterback.

To (Kyle) Williams and many others, Maye's obvious strengths should help New England remain in contention. He has every tool to succeed. New England has a chance to win almost every game he starts."

Jeremy Fowler makes solid points to bolster a downtrodden and shellshocked Patriot Nation. There is a lot to be positive about. And as the sting of the drubbing by Seattle begins to wear off, it's now time to kick up the offseason chatter and suggest just how the Patriots can right the ship that the Seahawks sunk on February 8.

Mike Vrabel has a lot of offseason work to do - again

The revamping of the Patriots' roster was never going to be a one-off enterprise. Credit goes to Mike Vrabel and no one else for taking a bottom-of-the-NFL 2024 roster and transforming it in one brilliant offseason into a Super Bowl team. It didn't end well, but the achievement of getting to the Big Game remains, and Vrabel should have been the NFL's Executive of the Year as well as Coach of the Year.

To continue to build that potential dynasty Jeremy Fowler talks about, the 2026 offseason will be a key component. The schedule will be grueling, a first-place team's schedule, due to dethroning the Bills from the top of the AFC East.

Vrabel has to make major upgrades in several areas to continue the climb toward becoming a Super Bowl winner, not just an also-ran.

One key area that has to be addressed above all others can be summed up in one word: sacks. The Super Bowl was lost because of sacks. The Patriots gave up six sacks in the game, bringing their four-game total to a mind-boggling 21 sacks allowed. The 2025 O-line was always a stopgap one.

It needs major infusions of better pass-blockers to raise the team's game and protect its greatest asset: Drake Maye.

On the other side of the ball, the Patriots' pass rush also needs a major improvement. To counter the Seahawks' six sacks, the Patriots could only notch one. Pressures and hits are stat-geek wonders, but they don't end plays. Sacks do. If you get them in bunches, you'll probably win. If not, you likely won't. Two key objectives for Mike Vrabel this offseason are similar to two in the 2025 offseason: improve the O-line and the edge.

We'll see if he thinks the same in free agency and the draft.
