If you asked Patriots fans what they hoped the team would do on the second day of the 2026 NFL Draft, most would say they would want to see a top tight end taken by the end of the night, preferably earlier if possible. That continued to be the sentiment across New England as a run on tight ends hit the second round, only for the Patriots to remain put at pick No. 95.

By that time, all of the big names were gone, most of whom were fan favorites. But they did manage to get an impressive prospect with a lot of potential by selecting Eli Raridon out of Notre Dame.

While his injury history is a major concern, since he suffered two ACL tears during his college career, most analysts believe he has a high ceiling due to his blend of being an effective pass catcher and blocker. That's exactly what the Patriots have been lacking over the years, so pairing him up with Hunter Henry will do wonders for the offense.

Better yet, Raridon's background as a basketball player could become a significant part of his game and something Josh McDaniels aims to leverage on game day, particularly for one of Drake Maye's known quarterback specialties.

Eli Raridon can give Drake Maye more chances to utilize his most impressive skill

While speaking to reporters immediately after the Patriots announced they were selecting him, Raridon shared how his basketball background has helped him become a deep threat on the field, something we've come to know Maye excels at.

He didn't necessarily get to utilize that part of his skill set much in 2025, but with a player like Raridon set to be in the lineup, he should feel more comfortable and have more opportunities to do so this upcoming season and beyond.

It's a trait that sets Maye apart from other quarterbacks around the league, so it would be wise for Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf to surround him with the kind of talent that allows him to use that, especially against some of the tougher defenses they are bound to face.

That will be crucial during the 2026 season, as they are projected to have one of the most difficult strength-of-schedule in the league. Stretching the field could be a big factor in how the Patriots' offense keeps their head afloat, and Raridon could play a role in ensuring that happens.
