Dream receivers floated as possible trade targets for the Patriots in 2025
Although the 2024 season is far from over, many Patriots fans and reporters are already looking ahead to the 2025 offseason, whether it be at who the team can acquire in free agency or who they could select in the upcoming draft. With so much cap space to spend and highly coveted draft positioning, it's easy to get excited about all the possibilities months ahead of time.
Because the Patriots are expected to spend big money on some free agents, especially wide receivers, plenty of names have already begun to be listed as potential targets, most of whom will be free agents. At the top of the list is current Bengals WR2 Tee Higgins, who will be testing free agency for the first time in his career.
New England will have the cash to entice him, as he has made it clear he wants to be paid the big bucks, and hopefully, that will be enough to get him in the building.
However, if the team wants to explore trade options, NFL insider Albert Breer suggests a few high-profile players that might become available.
Albert Breer believes a few dream players could be on the Patriots radar in 2025
During an appearance on NBC Sports Boston's pregame show this past Sunday, Breer spoke about the possibility that the Patriots could go down the trade route for a top receiver if some top talent becomes available. While it's too early to declare who that will be, he did suggest a couple of names worth watching over the next few months.
Because no player appears off-limits, seeing guys like A.J. Brown and Tyreek Hill traded in their prime, the insider believes a guy like Commanders' Terry McLaurin could have a similar fate to Hill, as he is in a contract year. Or someone like Seahawks' D.K. Metcalf could be on the trade block now with the rise of Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
“That’s where Terry McLaurin is. That’s where DK Metcalf is. DK Metcalf could be a little bit of a different story. They have other answers at receiver on that roster with Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba now emerging. So Metcalf could be an interesting name.”
Either player would be an incredible upgrade and long-term solution for the Patriots' offense and an excellent asset for Drake Maye to work with throughout his career. To make the possibilities even more enticing, Breer mentioned two more players (Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson) who could be on the move in 2025, but for different reasons.
“Those two places are going to have new coaches in 2025. Those two places, one will have a new general manager, the other could have somebody new in charge of personnel. So those would be two other names to look at.”
So, it looks like the Patriots will have a few more options than initially anticipated. At least, we can hope!
