Super Bowl LX did not go the way that Drake Maye or the New England Patriots hoped it'd go, as they struggled to do anything offensively and ultimately lost the game 29 to 13. The Patriots trailed 9-0 entering the locker room at halftime, and, unfortunately, Maye just never figured things out.
Cris Collinsworth, who was on the call for NBC with Mike Tirico, did not hold back on criticizing Maye (and, in his defense, it was well-deserved). Before the Patriots scored their first touchdown of the game, Collinsworth had this to say about Maye and how lackluster he had been up until that point:
“Maybe there was no chance that [the Patriots] were going to win this game, but there were some chances to get a little momentum going at some point on offense, and they never did. I said Drake Maye has to be great tonight. He has not been.”
Maye then proceeded to throw two straight bombs, with the second one going for a touchdown to Mack Hollins to pull the game within 12. That was sadly the last bit of shine we'd really see from Maye and this Pats offense though. They did have what looked to be a potentially promising drive after the Seahawks had to punt on their next possession, but Maye threw an awful pick, essentially icing the game.
Collinsworth had no clue what to tell the viewers after that interception and said as much on the broadcast.
“Uh, I’ve got nothing for you here," Collinsworth said. "There’s just no way that ball was going to be completed. And it really wasn’t that close to desperation time yet where you have to put it in harm’s way.”
Cris Collinsworth laid into Drake Maye for miserable Super Bowl performance
Patriots fans won't be happy about Collinsworth's comments, but to his credit, Maye didn't play well. The first quote from Collinsworth here preceded two excellent throws from Maye that resulted in the game becoming closer. But, for the majority of the night, the second-year quarterback struggled to find his footing, and that's going to be one of the big storylines from this game.
Even though this Super Bowl didn't go the way Patriots fans had hoped, Maye had one heck of a season, and this is hopefully only the beginning for him being a rockstar in this league. Yes, this game is going to be a talking point for Maye for quite some time, but no one expected him and the Pats to be here in the first place so that's an accomplishment for sure.
Hopefully this isn't the last time Maye suits up in a Super Bowl for the Patriots and he has a shot at redemption in the future.
