The Patriots' 2024 season was one fans would rather forget for a number of reasons, and unfortunately, that includes more than just what we saw on the field. Besides their lackluster performances that led to another 4-13 season and Jerod Mayo's departure, there was also a lot of drama behind the scenes, with even rumors of a mutiny at one point later in the year.
Among the most headline-creating stories was the alleged tension in the quarterback room due to rookie Joe Milton's belief that he is a starting-caliber player in the league. Because fellow 2024 draft pick Drake Maye wasn't succeeding week in and week out, it was reported that Milton started to itch for his opportunity.
To avoid any further dilemma, since it is presumed that Maye is the future of the franchise, Mike Vrabel made sure to prioritize moving Milton early this offseason. That's why he was traded to the Cowboys, where he reportedly wanted to be traded, and he has already impressed his new team with his performances thus far.
But it's the same pattern that the Patriots got to know from the former Tennessee starter, as his erratic performances would often bring optimism and then slowly deteriorate from there, as seen in his preseason debut in Dallas.
The Cowboys and their fans got a firsthand look at the roller coaster ride that is Joe Milton
In their preseason opener against the Rams on Saturday, Milton was given the start in Dak Prescott's absence and had a chaotic time through most of the game.
While his stats aren't entirely horrendous nor anything to tout, as he finished the day recording 17/29 attempts for 143 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, he racked up too many head-scratching moments for fans to be thrilled about.
Worse than a bad miss from Milton here…

Making the situation even more complicated and right on cue with how he looked during his one year spent in New England were moments of impressive play, like a touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter to bring the Cowboys out of the hole.
With plenty of time to read the field due to great blocking from his offensive line, Milton threw a dart to Rivaldo Fairweather in the end zone, reminding fans just how good of an arm he has.

But that doesn't mean they've forgotten how it happened too much earlier in the game, with massive overthrows and questionable decision-making.
It was a harsh reminder to all those who began to hype up Milton for his training camp performances, which is exactly what happened with the Patriots last year. Although he played well against the Bills' backups in Week 18, which might be why Dallas was willing to trade for him, he has proven time and time again that he isn't consistent or reliable, a problem that will only worsen with time.
It puts the Cowboys in a tough position moving forward, as they need to determine if Milton is valuable to their roster for the season ahead. There are so many factors to weigh, and it's hard to close the door on a player known for their rocket arm, but it wouldn't be surprising if a preseason performance like that makes Jerry Jones question Milton's future.
