One of the biggest stories of the Patriots' offseason has been whether cornerback Christian Gonzalez would start a holdout, as he is eligible for his first contract extension ahead of the 2026 season. The team has already picked up his fifth-year option for the 2027 season, but locking down their superstar cornerback as soon as possible is considered a priority.
Based on how Gonzalez has conducted himself thus far, a holdout (or even a hold-in) doesn't appear to be in his plans, and he has been present and fully participating in training camp since the first day this past weekend.
It's a good sign of what's to come and a promising development of what could have been a major distraction for the team during a crucial offseason.
On top of that, team owner Robert Kraft spoke highly of Gonzalez this past week and revealed that an offer has been made to Gonzalez to make him not only the highest-paid cornerback in the league, but also the highest-paid Patriot in franchise history.
That prompted many to believe that an extension was imminent, given the assumption that money is always the holdup in getting a deal done. But nothing more has been reported in the days since, and Gonzalez didn't appear all that thrilled that the situation was made a bit more public than he'd hoped.

The Pro Bowler nearly said as much while speaking to reporters after Tuesday's practice, sharing his appreciation for what Kraft has done and what was said, but reiterating that he would like to keep the negotiations and the ongoing process out of the media.
Although Kraft was probably trying to put some pressure on the front office to get the deal done, it might have been the wrong move for Gonzalez instead.
"Everybody knows what Mr. Kraft has done, a ton of respect for Mr. Kraft and what he’s done with this franchise. And it’s just something we don’t want to handle in the media. You know, I keep that with the team and my team and go on about that."
It's totally fair for any player to keep business out of the media, since reporters and fans can make the situation worse. In this case, Kraft might have inadvertently pressured Gonzalez into signing the contract instead of Eliot Wolf.
On the one hand, Kraft was speaking with the general manager to help get the deal done as soon as possible, applying pressure to Wolf to move it along. But knowing that a massive offer was made also puts Gonzalez in a tough spot, because we all know the kind of money on the table.
It essentially puts a lot of pressure on the cornerback now, and that's not something Gonzalez is interested in despite Kraft's likely good motives.
"I’m assuming that’s going to be a lot of this. But anything with that, you know, I keep that between my team, my agents, and the team and the front office and let them deal with that."
Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, this story is not going away any time soon, and until he signs on the dotted line, it will remain a topic of conversation, especially if a deal isn't struck before the preseason begins.
Maybe it won't get too out of hand, but considering how important he has become to the defense, it will inevitably remain a big story because the roster is far better with him on it. And the situation could eventually lead to a holdout if negotiations hit a speed bump.
Hopefully, that won't happen, but it's not out of the realm of possibilities.
