Looking at the current Patriots' roster, there are a lot of players who could be considered foundational pieces that will make them a competitive team in the future and for years to come. Among those is cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who has already proven to be one of the franchise's best draft picks in many years, and that is already being felt by some Patriots' newcomers this season.
Stefon Diggs understands just how good his new teammate is, mainly since Gonzalez was tasked with guarding him when they played the Texans in 2024. Now that they're teammates, though, they are choosing to utilize their knowledge of the game from different perspectives and using that to improve their performance on game day.
Gonzalez discussed how valuable Diggs has already become to the team, particularly for him, noting that they communicate with each other during games to share intel on what they're seeing from opposing cornerbacks and receivers.
“It’s awesome. I ask him so many questions. We talk during the games. He’ll come up to me the way a corner play and I’ll come ask him about how a receiver played, so it’s huge. It’s a lot for me as a corner. He’s one of the most competitive people I’ve met. He’s also a great person, a great teammate. He cares so much. A great leader.”
Despite being the younger and more inexperienced of the two, Gonzalez isn't the only one learning from their conversations.
Stefon Diggs and Christian Gonzalez have established a relationship that ultimately benefits the Patriots on both sides of the ball
While speaking to Mark Daniels of MassLive about their game-day briefings, Diggs shared how mutually beneficial it is for the pair to pick each other's brains, describing what he might ask Gonzalez during a game to help him better understand the opposing defense.

“I know as a DB you’ve got a different point of view or scope on things, so for me, if I can give him anything that will help or even vice versa, I’ll go to him and be like, ‘If I’m… pic.twitter.com/kJefmQ7NBa
This might be a normal thing on a team, but we generally don't hear much about it, so hearing Diggs and Gonzalez share this information only strengthens how close this roster is becoming and the competitiveness that Mike Vrabel has instilled in them despite the odds stacked against them this year.
We've seen just how good Diggs can be, and he has really returned to his typical form over the last two weeks, putting up back-to-back games with over 100 yards receiving. Additionally, we've seen the defense transforms with Gonzalez back in the lineup, so their shared approach to their opponents is clearly working well for the team overall.
It will be fun to continue to see how this plays out and how this Patriots team will fare. They're about hit a stretch of their schedule that could make them playoff contenders by November, so that's can't miss football.
