The apparent standoff between the Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez over a contract extension is now trickling into the summer, as the team is on break until training camp begins in mid-July. It is a situation that would ideally have been handled already, but negotiations appear to be at a standstill.
They already decided to pick up his fifth-year option, which was a move in the right direction, and they were reportedly beginning talks about a long-term extension.
And while they have emphasized their desire to keep Gonzalez around, the higher-ups don't appear to be working with any sort of urgency, and that's now being picked up by rival fans.
At the top of the list now is the Chargers, whose fans are already hypothesizing trades that could get the Pro Bowler onto their roster as soon as the 2026 season. It's a scenario that is already being discussed by Thomas Martinez of OnSI, especially since the team has been mock-drafted to select a cornerback in next year's draft.
Although this doesn't necessarily push the Patriots to get a deal done any faster, it does show that the competition is going to pay close attention to what happens with Gonzalez, particularly if a deal isn't reached, and they'll be ready to make the call about a trade as soon as possible.
Rival fanbases are already dreaming of trading for Christian Gonzalez
If they, for some reason, decided they don't want Gonzalez to be with the team long-term, receiving calls about his availability from several teams is an ideal situation for the Patriots. They'd inevitably get a first-round pick, at minimum, to acquire him, and teams will be lining up to make an offer.
But, at the same time, knowing that also gives Gonzalez power during negotiations, and the longer the Patriots draw this out, the more the situation moves in the cornerback's favor. That's obviously good for Gonzalez, but bad for New England.
It would be better for all parties involved to get a deal done before training camp starts, so there are no holdouts to deal with, and Gonzalez doesn't miss any practice time ahead of a season already projected to be incredibly difficult.
On top of that, there are other cornerbacks looking for extensions this offseason, most notably fellow 2023 draftee Devon Witherspoon, and the Patriots will be on the hook for even more money if the Seahawks get a deal done with him first.
That, too, works in Gonzalez's favor, and it's not something the Patriots should want to happen. Getting a deal done soon ensures the focus of training camp can be on the 2026 season without further distractions, and we know this offseason has already been filled with plenty of them.
It's expected that a deal won't get done until the team gets back in town for training camp, meaning we'll have to hear all about other teams' interest, potential trade talks, and rumors about Gonzalez's alleged contract demands for several more weeks, which is unfortunate.
However, if at the end of it all the Patriots reward him with the contract he has earned and deserves, then at least that's the kind of ending we can't complain about.
