Besides the hopeful trade for wide receiver AJ Brown, Patriots fans have had the dream of the front office going all-in for a different player who would make a massive difference for their future, which is why Maxx Crosby was the focus early in the offseason.
Once he was traded to the Ravens, it was clear that was off the table. Then once they backed out, it was put back on the table. But the trade compensation wasn't ideal in the eyes of Patriots' fans, even if they also had their hopes set on another legendary pass rusher, Myles Garrett.
Rumors have circulated that the Browns were willing to listen to offers for the future Hall of Famer, even if they insisted they weren't actively looking to trade the face of the franchise. But now that they agreed to send him to the Rams, it's clear that wasn't entirely accurate.
It also proves that the Patriots had no chance of making a serious offer for Garrett and were probably never going to pursue him seriously, regardless of whether he was made readily available.
Myles Garrett was never going to be traded to the Patriots this offseason
Despite a strong desire among Patriots fans for Garrett to be the next franchise star in Foxboro, it's beyond clear at this point that there was no real possibility Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf would agree to this level of trade, even if it appears they will for AJ Brown.
If the receiver wasn't available, maybe the Patriots would be more inclined to inquire about a deal, but at this point, they sound more than confident with the defensive line that they have and have faith in the young pass-rushing group they have put together.
That's a positive sign for what's to come for the 2026 season, and that should be exciting for Patriots fans, but it's also slightly disappointing considering a talent like Garrett doesn't get traded almost ever in professional sports, never mind the NFL.
Regardless, if they manage to pull off a trade for Brown, it does show that this new front office is willing to do what it takes to address some of the roster's biggest weaknesses, even if some fans might wish it were for someone like Garrett instead.
That, at the very least, leaves it on the table for the future, and maybe they'll get an opportunity to get a player like him eventually. We can only hope.
