Bills' predictable (and likely) nightmare would be a dream come true for Patriots

With the most important parts of the offseason now in the rearview mirror, as the 2026 NFL Draft concluded last weekend, the Patriots can now solely focus on the rest of the summer and prepare for what is already projected to be a much tougher season than last year.

They accomplished the unexpected by winning 14 games, defeating three teams with the toughest defenses in the league, and representing the AFC in the Super Bowl, all far from what analysts projected they would do in Year 1 under Mike Vrabel.

The expectations have now been adjusted heading into 2026, and although they're facing a brutal schedule, they've proven they can win more than they lose, which is exactly what they need to do.

Perhaps almost as important will be remaining the top dog in the AFC East, with the Bills on their tail, hoping to regain the divisional crown after reigning supreme for five straight seasons.

But what if Buffalo's future isn't as bright as they think it is? They've made some big moves this offseason to improve the roster, specifically the offense around Josh Allen, most notably trading for wide receiver DJ Moore. Yet there's a chance they didn't do enough, and they fall flat on their faces (again) while their Super Bowl window continues to inch closed.

The Bills could be on an all-too-familiar path in 2026 that sees the Patriots celebrating instead

That's something Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report believes would be the nightmare scenario for the Bills in 2026, a welcome result for the Patriots, who have their work cut out to maintain their spot atop the division.

"Despite mixing things up at the top and bringing in a shiny new receiver, the Bills fall short of the AFC title game for the fifth time in six years."

A new head coach and staff, along with some noteworthy additions to the roster, might not be enough to get the Bills out of their rut and make it to the Super Bowl.

They had a chance to take advantage of the Chiefs-less AFC playoffs last year, but, as usual, they failed, losing to the Broncos in the divisional round. It was perhaps their one chance to avoid their biggest kryptonite in Patrick Mahomes, but they failed to capitalize on the moment and instead watched the Patriots in the AFC Championship.

Seeing New England regain their hold on the division will likely motivate Buffalo to play even harder this year, and they'll certainly need it. The Patriots got better, and while it looks like the Bills did too, there's plenty of reason to believe they'll fall short again when the games count the most.
