Another wasted Patriots draft class is about to disappear on cutdown day

The roster cut deadline is less than 48 hours away, and the Patriots have a lot of moves left to make before they finally announce their official 53-man roster for the 2025 season. They made a jump start on getting the team together after their blowout loss to the Giants in their preseason finale, but they have a long way to go before we have a real look at what their team will be this year.

For most analysts who have made their predictions about what the roster will be in the weeks leading to cut-down day, it has been easy to put together a roster of around 45 players. Beyond that, however, it hasn't been as easy, as the team currently lacks significant depth at several positions, making it difficult to guess who should and shouldn't be around this fall.

But one thing is already abundantly clear: the 2024 draft class might be among the easiest cuts, other than quarterback Drake Maye.

The Patriots continue to suffer from a long history of bad draft classes

The already questionable group was projected to be on the outskirts this summer, and for the most part, they have been. Wide receivers Javon Baker and Ja'Lynn Polk were among the most noteworthy, neither of whom was able to make much of an impact during training camp, some of which was out of their control, which ultimately led to Polk being placed on season-ending IR and Baker hoping to make the roster in a special teams role.

The remaining group consisting of T Caedan Wallace, G Layden Robinson (who was released with an injury designation on Sunday), CB Marcellas Dial (who was placed on IR earlier this summer), QB Joe Milton III (who was traded to the Cowboys), and TE Jaheim Bell (who was released after the preseason finale, have all been dealt different fates this offseason, with some looking like they'll continue somewhere outside of New England.

It's not a great look for a team in need of a complete roster makeover, as the most recent draft classes continue to stack more busts than wins.

That pattern has a chance to keep going with the uncertain futures of S Kyle Dugger (drafted in 2020), LB Anfernee Jennings (a 2020 draft pick), LB Marte Mapu (drafted in 2023), and G Cole Strange (drafted in 2022).

The last five draft classes could become miniscule this season depending on what happens with those players, and further proves just how far the Patriots are from being a legitimate contender and how much work still needs to be done by the new regime. It was a tough team to come into for Mike Vrabel and Co., but most believe if anyone is capable of turning the Patriots around, it's them.
