All of the conversation in the NFL over the last few weeks has been about the impending trade deadline on November 10. The Patriots remain in the conversation as buyers, but they could become sellers if they want to add to their stockpile of future draft picks.
Given the number of injuries across the roster, it's hard to imagine they have many players that teams around the NFL would be calling about. But 49ers fans have made it clear that they hope their team inquires about cornerback Marcus Jones,
While it's somewhat shocking that any opposing fanbase would be looking at a 5-foot-8 cornerback, who is productive but constantly outmatched due to his size, Jones has been a versatile weapon for the Patriots since he was drafted in the third round in 2022.
He's not only been a reliable part of the secondary, but he's also earned the label of a legitimate threat as a punt returner and can even contribute on offense. That versatility likely entices a team like the 49ers, who have dealt with their fair share of injuries in recent years.
Nick San Miguel of Niner Noise believes he would be the perfect fit for what the 49ers' secondary lacks, along with the special-teams help they need, and he hopes the Patriots will make him available, even though he seems untouchable ahead of the deadline.
49ers fans want the team to seriously consider a move for Marcus Jones ahead of the deadline
Knowing the Patriots' secondary has dealt with several injuries this season, San Miguel notes that Jones is probably not available, saying they'd likely have to go on a "bad losing streak" to even entertain a trade for the 28-year-old.
"The only way the Patriots might even entertain trading him is if they go on a bad losing streak the next few weeks and look totally inept. and then the Niners would probably have to give them an insane package to land him and may even have to throw in a young player just for good measure."
An "insane" trade offer isn't an exaggeration. No one has reported that the Patriots are making Jones available, so if they change their mind, the 49ers would almost certainly have to overpay.
Maybe that's something 49ers fans would be willing to see happen, given how much San Miguel believes it needs help on special teams, and the Patriots know just how good Jones has been with the third unit over the last four years.
"Jones has an interception and a sack on the season, and he had three picks and a pick-six last year, so he's no slouch as a cornerback.
But the defensive back truly adds extra value as a returner. So far this season, Jones hasn't been especially explosive as he has 11 returns for 117 yards, but in 2025, he averaged over 17 yards per return and took two punts to the house with a long of 94 yards."
Of course, this sounds like a great addition for the 49ers, but it would be a massive loss for the Patriots in multiple ways.
So, what kind of deal could potentially make them shop Jones? San Miguel suggests that an offer that includes CB Renardo Green, WR Jacob Cowing, and a third-round pick might fit the bill.
Could a trade offer with multiple players and a draft pick be enough for the Patriots to deal Jones?
Sending away a cornerback and receiving another in return wouldn't be such a bad move for the Patriots, especially if it's someone as productive as Green.
The 2024 second-round pick is on pace for a record season, already recording 26 combined tackles, 5 passes defended, and 3 interceptions returned for two yards. He's missed just three games in his career so far, and given his age, he could grow into the kind of player the Patriots inevitably want on their roster, particularly under Mike Vrabel.
On top of that, he also has height on Jones, since Green is 6 feet tall, but the fact that he has mostly played outside for the 49ers might make him a little less enticing for the Patriots, unless they really are shopping Carlton Davis, as Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer has suggested in recent days.
If they are able to trade the veteran, then Green makes a lot more sense.
Adding Cowing, who primarily plays on special teams, immediately fills the void Jones left, and a third-round pick would certainly sweeten the deal. That would likely make the Patriots pause and seriously consider the trade, but moving on from a proven weapon like Jones feels like a mistake.
They already know how productive he is for their team, and he hasn't given Vrabel any reason to want him off the roster. They'd maybe make him available if they were desperate to add more draft picks, but that would be, and should be, the only way they agree to a trade.
Otherwise, as good as this proposed deal may sound, it's hard to overlook how valuable Jones has become for New England.
