Why did the Patriots pass on a first round wide receiver?

The New England Patriots passed on a first round wide receiver and instead opted for Christian Gonzalez. Why did they choose to do this?  To be fair, I think the Pats did land the best cornerback in the 2023 NFL Draft when they managed to take Christian Gonzalez out of Oregon.

He’s got the size and ability to play in man and zone and seems to be exactly what the Patriots were looking for at CB.  He should be a day one starter for the team.

However, shortly after the Gonzalez selection, four straight wide receivers went to the Seahawks, Chargers, Ravens, and Vikings.  The Pats clearly decided that they didn’t want to take a chance on any of those players, but why?

All four were legitimate first round talents and all had unique skillsets that could have fit nicely on the roster.  Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a crafty route runner who could have done a ton of damage in the middle of the field.

Quentin Johnston is a fast and quite big wide receiver who would have brought play speed and 50/50 ball potential to the team, which is needed.

Zay Flowers is quite fast and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien has worked with such speedsters before as an OC and as a head coach.  Flowers could have fit right in with the offense and could have brought a skillset that the offense doesn’t currently have.

Jordan Addison has the ability to work at all areas of the field and may have been the most well-rounded wide receiver in the 2023 NFL Draft class.  It was kind of frustrating to see the Pats not take a wide receiver until late in the 2023 NFL Draft.

They went heavy defense and took quite a few interior offensive linemen in the middle rounds before grabbing two wide receivers late.  I do think the Patriots got decent value but the frustration of not investing legitimate resources into the WR room continues to haunt the team.
