The San Francisco 49ers have received calls about the availability of Trey Lance. Could the Patriots offer Mac Jones in a deal for the third overall pick?  It isn’t as outrageous as it seems on the surface.  There were rumors that the San Francisco 49ers traded up to the third overall pick back in 2021 because the were eyeing Mac Jones.

The argument there was that Jones seemed to be the most pro ready and had the desirable qualities to be able to excel in Kyle Shanahan’s offenses.  That obviously wasn’t the case, as they took a chance on Trey Lance, who appeared to have an ultra-high ceiling, at least compared to Mac Jones.

Well, after hardly playing in his rookie season and suffering a season-ending injury in year two, just to be replaced by Mr. Irrelevant, Lance’s future in SF seems murky at best.

Would the 49ers be willing to trade Trey Lance for a return that included Mac Jones?

Mac Jones trade packages Pats can offer for Trey Lance

Trade package #1

49ers receive: Mac Jones, 2023 4th round pick
Patriots receive: Trey Lance

The first package sends Mac Jones and a 2023 4th round pick for Trey Lance.  Lance is likely going to have a few teams wanting to acquire his services.  He’s hardly played in the NFL and is still 23 years old, so it’s not like he’s “washed up” or anything like that.  Another team is going to give him a chance, so the Patriots may have to pay up.

Trade package #2

49ers receive:  Mac Jones, 2023 first round pick, 2023 3rd round pick
Patriots receive: Trey Lance, Deebo Samuel

The second package lands the Patriots Trey Lance and a stud wide receiver in Deebo Samuel.  This one is highly unlikely to happen I’m sure, but one can hope, right?  This would take the Patriots out of the running to take a wide receiver with one of their top picks, I’d assume.

They obviously would not have their first round pick, but I guess they could still take a wide receiver.

However, Deebo Samuel is very good and is a threat as a running back and a wide receiver.

Would you all be OK with this trade?

Trade package #3

49ers receive: Mac Jones
Patriots receive: Trey Lance

The last proposed trade package is a simple one.  How about a player for player swamp?  It doesn’t usually happen, but both QBs have endured some rocky roads on their respective teams and both could use a fresh start.

Jones could even slide in as the long-term starter for the team if they’d feel more comfortable with him than Brock Purdy, who was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.  The 49ers could then trade Brock Purdy when he gets healthy, and their QB room would consist of Jones and Sam Darnold as the backup.

Unlikely, but it can happen until it doesn’t.
