This could be Bill Belichick’s last season as the New England Patriots’ head coach. Who would be the best choice to succeed him when his time is up?  I think there is one very obvious choice to succeed Bill Belichick in New England, but when the time comes, I’m sure the organization will undergo a full and thorough search for the next head coach.

When the time comes, it’ll be a huge period of transition for the team as Bill Belichick is going to likely end his tenure as the winningest and best coach in the history of the NFL.  However, he’s 71 years old and is simply not going to be coaching for much longer.

Teams typically interview quite a few candidates when they undergo head coaching searches, and the Pats might follow suit, perhaps interviewing five, seven, or even 10 or more candidates.

Jerod Mayo

The first candidate is the most likely one in my opinion.  Jerod Mayo has been with the organization as a coach since 2019 working with the linebackers and also played for the team from 2008 to 2015, winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

He’s been praised by countless people inside the organization and has interviewed for head coaching jobs before.  It’s clear that he has head coach material as Belichick has wanted him to stick around on the team and has successfully prevented him from leaving for a different role.

This feels right.
