With a recent report that the New England Patriots were shopping Mac Jones this offseason, let’s list reasons why that could be a bad idea.  My guess is that the fanbase is mostly split on Mac Jones, but I think most can agree that Jones and the offense as a whole got absolutely hosed in 2022 with the coaching set up.

Matt Patricia is obviously not an offensive coordinator and that unfortunately showed in big ways last year.  The offense held the team back while the defense was its usual dominant self.  Because of the bad offensive play in 2022, many pinned some of the blame on Mac Jones and it seems like the third year Alabama product is on thin ice in New England.

We’ll see what happens in the future, but here’s why trading Jones might not be a good idea.

Three reasons the Patriots shouldn’t trade Mac Jones

Last year was legitimately unfair to Mac Jones

Saying the word “unfair” with anything regarding the NFL sounds kind of silly, but yeah, it was unfair.  Bill Belichick likely had a very different vision for how the offense was going to look in 2022.  Patricia is a defensive coach and I’m not sure we’ve seen something like what went on last year in the modern-day NFL.

Even though Bailey Zappe looked more in command of the offense than Mac Jones did, it still wasn’t fair to Jones that he went from one of the 10 best offensive coordinators of this generation in Josh McDaniels to a defensive coach calling plays.

That alone might give the Patriots reason enough to start Jones in 2023.
