It has been said plenty of times since the moment the 2022 season ended. The upcoming offseason for the New England Patriots is going to be the most crucial in recent memory. Looking at last season as a whole, it was clear the Patriots underachieved and had certain positions on the roster that didn’t quite produce in the way the team wanted. These key positions need to be a priority for the Patriots this offseason in order for them to get where they want to be.

Offensive Tackle

This may be the single most important position for the Patriots to improve upon and it has already been written about at length. The position being offensive line or more specifically, offensive tackle. Both tackle spots struggled last season, resulting in Mac Jones being knocked to the ground too often. With a number of players hitting free agency such as Mike McGlinchey and Orlando Brown, the Patriots will have a number of options to improve upon the tackle position. The draft will also be an opportunity to address the position as this draft is especially deep at said position.

Wide Receiver

For the Patriots to be more dynamic as an offense, they need more from the wide receiver position. A lot hinges on the potential return of Jakobi Meyers as he is set to be a free agent next week. Either way the Patriots will have options in the draft or in the trade market to help improve the group. Players such as DeVante Parker and Tyquan Thornton will likely return and should improve upon their production from last season. If the Patriots can improve the receiver spot this offseason it should help the offense immensely.

Cornerback

Another position that hinges on the potential return of a key player is cornerback. Jonathan Jones is to become a free agent next week and if he returns or not it will greatly affect how the Patriots try to improve the cornerback spot. The team did see solid play at this position in 2022, but seemed to struggle against top receivers. This is a very deep cornerback class in the draft and there could also be solid options in free agency such as Jamel Dean or Cameron Sutton. Whether or not Jones returns, the team will likely try to upgrade this position in the coming weeks.
