The Patriots should pursue this recently released player

A major player in the AFC East was released earlier this week, and he could be a huge target for the New England Patriots.  The team’s main issue is their offensive line, which was simply rough in 2022.

Both Isaiah Wynn and Trent Brown were not playing well, but the interior did seem to hold up, even though Cole Strange went through his rookie struggles.  While the interior lineup of Strange/Andrews/Onwenu could be elite, the tackle positions are huge question marks.

Could the Patriots simply slide Trent Brown back to the right side, perhaps draft someone to develop behind him, and even draft a starting left tackle?  Sure.  I do think it’s also likely that the team could look to free agency to satisfy one or both of their tackle needs.

Well, former Tennessee Titan Taylor Lewan was released earlier this week after another injury-plagued season.  He has played in just 20 games over the last three seasons, missing most of the season in 2020 and 2022.

However, even though there is a valid injury concern there, perhaps a potential change of scenery could bode well for Lewan.  He’s played in over 100 games in the NFL and has been elite at points in his career.

I’d also assume that he won’t cost a ton either because of coming off of a fresh injury.  With the amount of cap space that the team has, this could be a no-brainer.  Pairing Lewan with a potential second or third round draft pick to hopefully develop behind him could be a stellar plan.

Also, the Patriots could invest in a nice backup player like a Riley Reiff who has played both tackle positions before.  This type of plan could be put in place if Lewan or even Trent Brown struggle with injuries.

Honestly, there really isn’t any excuse for the Pats to not improve their offensive line in 2023.  There are endless options out there and Taylor Lewan could be one.
