Should the New England Patriots sign Jimmy Garoppolo?

The New England Patriots could sniff around at available quarterbacks this offseason, and Jimmy Garoppolo could be a nice answer.  Mac Jones regressed in year two, but I am inclined to believe that Matt Patricia was the main culprit for his regression.

Well, Patricia has been replaced by Bill O’Brien, who is a proven offensive mind with success in college and in the NFL.  It does appear like the Patriots will ride with Mac Jones in 2023 and perhaps beyond, but I do think they need to do their due diligence and evaluate the QB market this offseason.

One name to potentially monitor is Jimmy Garoppolo, the former Patriot and current 49er, who is not going to be re-signed by San Francisco.  I don’t think Garoppolo does anything particularly better than Mac Jones, but Garoppolo has been to a Super Bowl and has been a part of deep playoff runs.

He’s a proven winner in the NFL and might be the best chance New England has at getting back to the Super Bowl with the remaining years that Bill Belichick has in the NFL.

Over his career, Garoppolo has gone 40-17 overall.  He’s thrown for 14,289 passing yards, 87 touchdowns, 42 interceptions, and has earned a passer rating of 99.6.  He’s also gone 4-2 in the playoffs, so he’s 44-19 over his entire career.

In this scenario, the Patriots would likely have to find a trade partner for Mac Jones, and the Las Vegas Raiders might make the most sense.  Ask yourself this,

Would you rather have Mac Jones under center in 2023, or Jimmy Garoppolo + the return for Mac Jones from a team, perhaps the Raiders?

I think when you frame it like this, the potential signing in free agency could make a ton of sense.  Remember, the original plan years ago appeared to consist of New England moving on from Tom Brady in favor of Garoppolo, so perhaps Bill Belichick could finally get his wish.
