This could be one of the safer option if the Patriots wanted to truly pivot from Mac Jones. While the free agent market for quarterbacks are less than stellar this offseason, there’s still some potential options out there that should be starters in the league come September.

As far as quarterbacks that should be on the open market (not counting Geno Smith or Daniel Jones; it sounds like they’ll be back on their respective teams next year), the list has a few interesting names.

There’s a couple of former Patriots out on the market in Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett. Both were productive in their playing time last year, and could be in for a payday this offseason. Some other options on the board include Baker Mayfield, Gardner Minshew, and Andy Dalton.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, none of these options move the needle enough to warrant the Patriots to move off of Mac Jones. Signing a veteran quarterback to compete with Mac Jones would also just limit the team’s spending more than necessary…It’s kinda pointless.

The Patriots usually have a track record of spending money wisely in free agency, therefore spending money on a middle-of-the-road QB at best in free agency probably isn’t in the cards for Robert Kraft and the Patriots.
