The New England Patriots need to improve on a few positions during the 2023 offseason, but three of them stick out the most.  The good thing about the 2022 New England Patriots is that it was easy to see what the problems were.

I think one of those problems was fixed when the team decided to bring back Bill O’Brien and name him the offensive coordinator.  The playcalling appears to be in good hands now, which is great.  However, there are other issues, mostly on offense, that the team needs to figure out this offseason.

Luckily, the team is strapped with $50 million in cap space, so they can chase some players at certain positions if they wanted to.

What are the three biggest positions for the Patriots to improve on this offseasson?

Three most important positions to improve for Patriots in 2023

Tackle

Being that Isaiah Wynn is a free agent and Trent Brown looked quite bad this year, it’d be smart to add a quality body or two to the tackle room.  The tackle situation was so dire this year that Marcus Cannon even saw some action at the position.

Perhaps the main reason for this was because of Matt Patricia’s ineptness on offense, or maybe the team does indeed need better tackle talent.  I think Trent Brown is just fine at his normal right tackle spot, so perhaps the Pats only need to target the left tackle position.

However, I would not be surprised to see the team invest big money in either tackle spots this offseason.  They have plenty cap space on hand to chase some of the top free agent tackles if they chose to.

Wide Receiver

This just in: wide receiver is a huge need for this team.  Their first order of business for this position should be to re-sign Jakobi Meyers.  From there, I think we’ll see the Patriots try and sniff around the trade market to land a wide receiver, and I also think they’ll look to free agency again to see what else is out there.

They do have a high enough pick to get one of the top receivers in the 2023 NFL Draft, so I’d also expect them to use a high pick on a pass catcher as well.  If the team can strike a deal with Jakobi Meyers, that would, at the very least, raise the floor of their WR room, which needs a massive high-end boost.

Cornerback

New England has about 15 cornerbacks with the last name Jones on their roster, but nothing indicates that they have any sort of true CB1 solution.  This might be something they look to the NFL Draft to find, as the free agent cornerback class isn’t special.

Marcus Peters and James Bradberry are the top two names at this position, so nothing really to write home about, but perhaps the Pats feel comfortable in investing in one cornerback in free agency who has a chance to start and looking to the NFL Draft to land one as well.

They’re in a division with a ton of talent at receiver and at quarterback, so it’s crucial that the team is able to put together a solid secondary.
