Why the Patriots should be interested in Derek Carr

Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback Derek Carr could be on the move this offseason, and the New England Patriots should look to acquire his services.  When it was reported that Carr would essentially be demoted an inactivated off of the team, that seemed to spell the end of his nearly decade long tenure as a Raider.

Drafted in 2014, Carr had been their starter since his rookie season.  He’s also been incredibly consistent during this time and has had to deal with quite of bit of nonsense in Oakland/Las Vegas.

The Raiders never really showed much stability at all during Carr’s time.  They seemed to cycle through head coaches and front offices with shocking regularity, and only two times did the team make the postseason since Carr was brought in.

Last year, the team went through quite a bit, and after they fired Jon Gruden, interim head coach Rich Bisaccia led the team down the stretch and was able to get them into the playoffs.  For whatever reason, the Raiders decided to not make Bisaccia the full-time head coach and instead hired Josh McDaniels, which has proven to be a disaster.

Since Raiders’ owner Mark Davis apparently does not have the cash on hand to fire McDaniels, he seems to be stuck with him.  This may give McDaniels and opportunity to bring in a quarterback he wants, and this process was started by sending Derek Carr home.

The Patriots should be all over trying to acquire Derek Carr in the offseason.  I think he fits the style of offense the team wants to run and has a more mellow, perhaps reserved personality that could fit in New England.

He’s got four seasons passing for at least 4,000 yards and two seasons with a passer rating above 100.  He has 217 career touchdown passes in the regular season to go with 99 interceptions.  According to Pro Football Reference, his career stats over a full 17 game season look like this:

383/594, 4,217 yards, 26 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 248 yards/game, and a 91.8 passer rating.

Sure, his numbers don’t jump off the page, but just think for a second if the Patriots got that exact production from their quarterback this season, where they would be?

To me, they are certainly in the playoffs, not already sitting at home.  With Bill Belichick likely not coaching longer, it creates the perfect time for him to make a run at a significant quarterback upgrade.
