Could the Patriots benefit from head coach firings?
The New England Patriots need to fix their offense badly. Matt Patricia is not cutting it. Could tIthe team benefit from head coach firings? I’m not sure how likely of a scenario this could be, but it’s clear that Matt Patricia is not who should be calling plays for the Patriots long-term.
The offense has had their moments of competency, but it’s largely been inconsistent and simply not good enough. Their 7-6 record does have them in the playoffs, but the team has taken a step back from where they were last year.
This was supposed to be a year where Mac Jones turned it on a bit, but he’s had to deal with poor play-calling and bad offensive line play for most of the season. Heading into 2023, the team will need to do a thorough search for a true play-caller. You know, someone who is not a defensive coordinator…
If the team is willing to look outside of their building, there could be some names available that might interest them. Every year, there are head coaches fired. It always happens and always will happen.
So far, Matt Rhule and Frank Reich have been fired, but Matt Rhule went back to college, so he’s out. Reich could be an option for 2023 offensive coordinator if he does not get another head coaching job this cycle.
Nathaniel Hackett of the Denver Broncos is likely going to be fired at the end of the year. Could he land on his feet as an OC? He was the OC when Aaron Rodgers won back to back MVP awards, so maybe there is something there.
I do think there is a small chance that the Browns fire Kevin Stefanski as well. They might run it back now that Deshaun Watson has returned, but you never know.
In the AFC, Frank Reich, Kevin Stefanski, and Nathaniel Hackett are either available or could be available after this year if the Patriots wanted to look outside the organization for their next offensive coordinator.
In the NFC, Kliff Kingsbury is not likely to survive in Arizona into 2023, so he’s a name to watch. Byron Leftwich might not be as safe as many of us think in Tampa Bay as their offensive coordinator. As a former quarterback, he could be a valuable resource for Mac Jones.
While unlikely, Packers’ head coach Matt LaFleur could potentially get the boot. He’ll probably survive, though. Lastly, I think there is an off chance that the Falcons fire Arthur Smith, who was the offensive coordinator in Tennessee when Ryan Tannehill decided he was going to be an above average quarterback.
I do think there are a bunch of names out there for the New England Patriots if they wanted to move on from Matt Patricia and find someone legitimate to be the offensive coordinator.
