The New England Patriots have a long way to go on offense

The inconsistent New England Patriots’ offense yet again reared its ugly head on Thursday night football against the Buffalo Bills.  The team has now dropped two games in a row, albeit to two playoff teams.  The Thanksgiving day showdown against the Vikings offered a glimpse into what the offense could be if things were clicking.

However, on Thursday against the Bills, the offense reverted back to their old ways.  Matt Patricia simply is not cutting it as a play-caller, and should not have these duties in 2023.  Perhaps just a small play-caller change might make a huge difference.

The Patriots’ offense is not dynamic in any way.  Marcus Jones, a defensive back, was legitimately the lone bright spot for the offense last night.  He took a Mac Jones pass to the house and was able to show off his wicked speed.

New England has a major problem.  Firstly, on offense, they have a bunch of good players, but none are great.  Rhamondre Stevenson might get there soon, but there is no one of note on that side of the ball.

Secondly, the good players likely need high quality play-calling in order to do some damage.  Unfortunately, with Matt Patricia, that high quality play-calling is virtually nonexistent.  It’s a bad situation all around for the team, and now they’re 6-6 and don’t look anything like a playoff team.

Bill Belichick clearly made a huge mistake when he essentially put Joe Judge and Patricia in control of the offense.  It’s clear that while the offense has had spurts of good play, those spurts become greatly outweighed by the bad play which has crippled the season to this point.

Mac Jones has not thrown an interception in four games and is likely doing his absolute best given what he has to deal with.  If the Patriots want to be competitive again, they will need to find a new play-caller.
