The New England Patriots should still look for QB upgrades
It has become clear that Mac Jones is not the problem in New England, but the Patriots should still look for a quarterback upgrade in 2023. Mac Jones seems pretty well-liked within the fanbase and is a captain on the team.
He also likely has earned a ton of respect for his teammates, and I think he can be a solid starting quarterback in the NFL, but nothing more than a Kirk Cousins in my opinion. The Kirk Cousins’ of the world can fill up a stat sheet nicely, but they are not where the NFL is headed.
Teams do not win Super Bowls with Kirk Cousins at QBs anymore. The league has evolved and is becoming more Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen than Kirk Cousins and Mac Jones. This is not the fault of Mac Jones.
Jones has to used what he was given from the football Gods to the best of his ability, and even though he has not benefitted from the offensive play-calling this year, which has been bad, the Patriot should still see if there is a legitimate QB upgrade to be had.
The two main options I’d be talking about are Lamar Jackson and Tom Brady. Jackson and Brady are both free agents, but the Ravens appear like they’ll put a tag on him while they hammer out a long-term deal.
You never know, though, Jackson could request a trade or the two sides end up not being able to agree on a number for the contract. Tom Brady is also a free agent at the end of this season and likely will not return to Tampa Bay if he continues to play.
The Patriots could potentially be a nice homecoming for the veteran, but I’m not sure how receptive Brady would be to a Matt Patricia calling plays. The Patriots could also take a stab at some sort of developmental player in the NFL draft who might have more desirable tools than Jones does.
I’m not saying that Jones isn’t any good, but I do think an upgrade could be attempted.
