In 2022, there’s no secret the New England Patriots’ offense has severely struggled. Many suspect the downgrade in offensive production stems from all of the moving parts at the coaching position partnered with a down year from Pro Bowler Mac Jones. A reason many haven’t taken into consideration is the Patriots’ inability to stretch the field.

In the 2022 draft, the Patriots drafted the fastest person throughout the entire draft out of Baylor University, Tyquan Thornton. Thornton has shown amazing promise during the preseason and with the limited opportunities, he’s gotten. To be fair, the offensive line and Jones’ poor performance this season have affected the passing game tremendously.

This season, Thornton has recorded nine catches for 81 yards and one touchdown, according to ESPN. One of those catches was a 21-yard reception, which is more of what the Patriots need to help benefit their offense. Thornton got hurt in the second preseason game and wasn’t able to return until the fifth week of the season. Since his return in week five against the Detroit Lions, he’s played in 66% of the snaps, reported Zack Cox for NESN.

The following game after the Lions, he scored two touchdowns, however, it appears he hasn’t been used in the offensive scheme much since. In fact, in three games he’s recorded 11 targets, three catches for 37 yards, and zero touchdowns.

"“Rookie WR has played a lot since his Week 5 return (66% of off. snaps), but here are his numbers since his two-TD.”"

Patriots Offensive Identity

At the moment, the Patriots have very little to any offensive identity. Oftentimes, it feels as if the offense is simply attempting to survive the week by not beating themselves. The offense has become extremely predictable, therefore, allowing teams to key in on Rhamondre Stevenson and Jakobi Meyers.

While the Patriots’ offense is stagnant this doesn’t represent the amount of talent on the ball offensively. Thornton is just one of the few talents that haven’t been utilized as often as they should be. Many often forget about how dynamic veteran TE Hunter Henry can be when utilized properly.

In hopes of an offensive prowess to save the outcome of the season, the biggest possibility may be to secure Las Vegas Raiders’ HC and former Patriots’ OC Josh McDaniels after he’s released. The Raiders continue to struggle with an immensely talented roster and may look to move on. Another option that could be a great fit is former Indianapolis Colts’ HC Frank Reich.
