The Patriots should sign Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason

The New England Patriots have quarterback questions for the long-term. Could those be answered by signing Jimmy Garoppolo next year?  When Jimmy G was originally drafted back in 2014, the idea was that he’d replace Tom Brady.

We all know how that story ended.  Tom Brady didn’t seem to like that very much and kept playing at a high level.  Garoppolo was dealt to the San Francisco 49ers multiple seasons ago, and began a new era in the Bay Area.

Under Garoppolo’s quarterbacking, the 49ers have appeared in one Super Bowl and have won much more than they have lost.  However, the former Patriot has battled injuries and some up and down play.  Mind you, this is coming within Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system, which is generally thought of to be more quarterback friendly.

The 49ers drafted Trey Lance back in 2021 with the idea that he’d eventually replace Garoppolo.  The process then began where the 49ers attempted to trade Garoppolo this past offseason, but a shoulder injury prevented a team from feeling comfortable enough to pull the trigger.

Now, after a gruesome injury to Trey Lance, Garoppolo is back in the starting lineup and appears to be commanding the team all the way through 2023.  He is a free agent at the end of the season, as that was part of the new contract that he and the 49ers agreed on.

There will be a team who gives Garoppolo a contract to be their starter.  I am a bit lower on him than most people, but the connections with the Patriots are obvious, and he has a much bigger track record of success than Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe.

Bill Belichick would finally get to see Garoppolo as the starter like I assume he envisioned back when he was drafted.  Could the Patriots entertain this idea?  Or are they going to roll with Mac Jones, or even take a bigger swing at another quarterback?
