Stephon Gilmore wants to go back to the Patriots?
A player of Stephon Gilmore’s caliber is rarely traded, especially when they seem to be at the peak of their career. During the four years spent with the Patriots, Gilmore played some of his best football, quickly earning him legendary status in the New England region.
What many felt was a potential overpay by Bill Belichick when his original signing with the Patriots was announced, Gilmore became one of the best at his position to ever play in Foxboro. In 56 games played from 2017 to 2021, the cornerback recorded 11 interceptions returned for 200 yards and two touchdowns in just the regular season. His standout performance through the years led him to be named a first-team All-Pro twice as he also won the coveted Defensive Player of the Year award in 2019.
And who can forget his game-saving interception in Super Bowl 53, leading to the Patriots winning their sixth Lombardi since 2001?
Before his trade to the Panthers in October of last season, it had been rumored the relationship between Gilmore and the organization was strained. It reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the corner’s playing status as he recovered from a quadriceps injury sustained at the end of the 2020 season.
However, what was said to be a chaotic situation between Gilmore and the Patriots last year appears to be water under the bridge now, as his former teammates and coaches welcomed him back to Gillette Stadium for the first time since his departure.
Although it wasn’t the return he was hoping for, with the Colts losing 26-3, the former Defensive Player of the Year couldn’t help but reminisce about the years spent suiting up for his opponent this week.
"“I mean, it’s a year ago that I got traded. It feels like I was just here. But played a lot of great ball here. And met a lot of great people here. You know, it’s part of it. You got to just move on. And they were the better team today.”"
Despite the loss, Gilmore took time to catch up with several former teammates after the game. From Jonathan Jones and Myles Bryant to Deatrich Wise and Matthew Judon, it was quite the reunion for all.
With so many relationships established during his time in New England, a key question regarding his future with the team was asked upon his return to the locker room. Because other top-name former players who ended their careers elsewhere remained close to the team after retirement, Gilmore was asked if he had plans to stay connected once he hung up his cleats.
"“Yeah, for sure. I mean, I had great years here — won a Super Bowl, Pro Bowls, Defensive Player of the Year. Of course it’ll be a place that I come back, show love to. A lot of great memories here and that’s why you play the game.”"
Whenever the time comes, all of New England would love to see a Patriots and Gilmore reunion.
