The New England Patriots have a tough task in week eight against the 5-2 New York Jets. What does Vegas think about the Patriots’ chances?  The team is now in quite an interesting situation.  The AFC East’s top three teams can’t stop winning, and the Patriots needed a win last week just to keep pace in last place.

Now the only team under .500 in the division, they have a bit of a hole to dig themselves out of.  The New York Jets are 5-2 and are perhaps the surprise of the 2022 season.  Their running game is alive, although with Breece Hall out for the season, that may take a step back.

Their defense is stingy and does not give an inch.  The Patriots pooper of a game last week against the Bears ruined a great chance to get themselves dug out of an early season hole.  Now they are facing a crucial must-win against New York.

What does Las Vegas think about the Patriots’ odds?

According to FanDuel, the Patriots are actually favored by 2.5 points on Sunday, and their moneyline odds are -138.  The over/under point total is set at 40.5  I’m actually a bit shocked that they are the favorites here.

I think the Jets are a tough team, and playing at home gives them a boost.  If you wanted to maximize your winnings for this game, you’d bet the Jets to cover the 2.5 point spread, Jets’ moneyline, and the over/under totals actually pay out the same amount.

I would take the Jets to cover the 2.5 points, actually, but if Bill Belichick can devise a plan to stop the Jets’ rushing attack, Zach Wilson will have to put the team on his back, which he cannot do.

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.

Predictions for Patriots vs. Jets

Now that I think of it more, I can’t see how the Patriots don’t come out absolutely blazing.  Their terrible loss to a bad Bears’ team surely made the entire team angry, to say the least.  I do think New England can win this game, the more I think of it.

Mac Jones is getting the start, but it’s unknown how much of a leash he will have.

Prediction: Patriots 17, Jets 13
