Could the New England Patriots buy at the trade deadline?
The New England Patriots have won two games in a row and are now in the playoff hunt. Could they be buyers at the trade deadline? Just a couple short weeks ago, the 1-3 New England Patriots looked about as out of it as a team could be. Now at 3-3, the team has new life, and rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe has this offense humming.
New England is now averaging over 20 points per game and their defense is allowing less than 20 points per game. The rushing attack is alive, and the passing attack can hit you from multiple angles. The conversation should now turn to the trade deadline, which is slowly but surely approaching.
At the beginning of the season, there were some obvious candidates to be traded from the Patriots at some point in 2022, and I don’t think those names have changed. However, could the team end up trading for a player or two now? Both Nelson Agholor and Isaiah Wynn haven’t had the best of seasons, and there values likely couldn’t be lower, but with the return of Tyquan Thornton to the rotation, and with the Patriots signing Marcus Cannon, both Agholor and Wynn could be on the move.
I do think both players could have multiple suitors, even if New England can’t get back more than a 6th or 7th rounder for each player. They won’t be apart of the team in 2023, so why not take what you can get? With that said, the team doesn’t have a lot of holes that would need a serious addressing at the deadline, but I do think the team could benefit from adding another cornerback with the injuries and youth the team has in the secondary at the moment.
And, for the right price, maybe New England could add another pass catcher, though I think DeVante Parker, Jakobi Meyers, Kendrick Bourne, and Tyquan Thornton will be plenty.
Last year’s free agency period proved that New England isn’t afraid to build from the outside, so them adding at the deadline is not something that I would find to be unlikely.
