Should Bailey Zappe be the backup once Mac Jones comes back?
New England Patriots’ rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe played well when Brian Hoyer left the game in week four. Should be now be the backup to Mac Jones? With Brian Hoyer headed to injured reserve with a concussion, Bailey Zappe might have a golden opportunity in front of him.
Injuries, especially concussions, are horrible, and hopefully Hoyer returns this season, but someone needs to take the backup position behind Mac Jones, and Bailey Zappe has a perfect opportunity to do so. A rookie out of Western Kentucky, Zappe got his first game action in week four when Brian Hoyer left the game.
Obviously, Mac Jones was already out with a high ankle sprain, so the Patriots had to call on their third string quarterback. Zappe, like many rookies across the NFL, have that new rookie smell. It’s that’s new thing in your life that you want to experience more. People tend to act differently, perhaps for the better, when change is put into their lives.
Bailey Zappe is could be that guy now for the Patriots. Obviously, when Mac Jones is healthy enough to play, he’ll be inserted back as the starter of the team. However, Zappe being installed as the QB2 could be an amazing thing for the Patriots in the long run.
It’s clear that New England’s offense isn’t good enough through four weeks, and Mac Jones has gotten the bulk of the work under center. What if the offense continues to struggle? Could the Patriots’ fanbase call for Zappe?
Mac Jones’ rookie season was actually pretty historic, so it’s weird to think that there’s a possibility of him being pulled from the starting spot if the offense struggles more. Change would need to be made if that’s the case, and there is some decent tape of Zappe in the NFL. New England was able to move the ball rather well in a tough environment.
