Robert Kraft didn’t want quarterback to start for the Patriots?
There was a lot of debate about what the Patriots should do after learning that starting quarterback, Mac Jones suffered a high ankle sprain in the game against the Ravens and who should start in his absence. Although the ultimate decision was made by Bill Belichick, who chose Brian Hoyer to fill in, members of the media and fanbase still felt the better decision was to go with rookie Bailey Zappe.
Of course, at this point, we know that Hoyer would suffer a head injury in Green Bay leading to Zappe taking over late in the first quarter. But the feeling of those wanting to see the rookie get his first start was reportedly shared by Patriots owner, Robert Kraft; at least according to sports analyst, Bill Simmons
During a recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons revealed New England’s owner is a big fan of the recent fourth-round draft pick and wanted to see the quarterback get the start in week four.
"“One thing I heard, as you know, I have some Pats birdies. Kraft loves Zappe, and Kraft thought he should have started this week over Hoyer. He’s like all in on Zappe.”"
Despite the loss, there has been a lot of chatter regarding Zappe’s performance in an especially tough atmosphere this week. As the Patriots face another must-win game against an opponent with a 1-3 record as well, who will be starting at quarterback is going to remain the most important decision.
It’s clear the coach and owner disagree on who would be best to get the win. But as the week has progressed with Jones continuing to recover from his ankle injury and Hoyer in concussion protocol, it’s appearing as though we will finally see Zappe get his proper first start against the Lions in Foxboro.
