New England Patriots name their captains for the 2022 season
The New England Patriots have officially named their captains for the 2022 season. The group contains both veteran and young players. Just a few days before their first game, the Patriots have announced the unquestioned leaders of the team for the 2022 season.
The team has six captains, a mix of veteran and young players, and also first-timer captains and veteran captains. There are two first-timer captains on the Patriots. Quarterback Mac Jones and defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. have earned the title for the first time in their careers.
Wise has been with the Patriots since 2017, while Jones is in his second season. The other four captains have held the role before. Ja’Whaun Bentley was a captain back in 2020, but after a one year absence returning it to Dont’a Hightower, he returns to the captain mix.
Matthew Slater, a future Hall of Famer, David Andrews, and Devin McCourty have all earned the nod yet again. David Andrews, for the sixth time, has been voted a captain. The steady center is just that–steady. He’s been one of the more reliable players on the Patriots and has always been able to hold his own.
The last two captains, Slater and McCourty, are entering their 12th season with this title. Being named and voted a captain is something that I’d assume every player in the NFL wants to experience. Mac Jones being voted a captain is an encouraging sign, as the second year player appears to have taken control of the offense. Even though the offense’s performance in camp hasn’t been ideal, Jones has been a clear voice for them.
Now with the clear leaders established on the roster, the New England Patriots will look to embark on their 2022 season, which might prove to be a difficult endeavor. The team opens up their regular season against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
It’s a standard 1:00 PM kickoff.
