Former New England Patriot and Super Bowl champion Marcus Cannon signed back with the team on Thursday. He’ll return on the practice squad.  It’s a logical reunion for the Patriots and Cannon, who spent nine years together from 2011-2019.  Cannon, a 5th round draft pick back in 2011 out of TCU, opted out of the 2020 season and spent the 2021 season with the Houston Texans.

The Patriots have signed him back after a two year divorce.  Cannon will begin his second tenure with the Patriots on the practice squad, and will likely be brought up to the active roster at some point.  He’s going to serve as some high quality depth.

A right tackle, Cannon played in 115 games and started 69 for the Patriots.  He was never named to a Pro Bowl, but earned a second team All-Pro nod back in 2016.  Marcus Cannon was a rock solid player for the Patriots.  He struggled with some injuries throughout his Patriots career, but was able to sign a $32.5 million contract extension during the 2016 season.

On March 17th of 2021, Cannon was traded from the Patriots to the Houston Texans, and was placed on injured reserve that October.  This is a logical reunion for both parties, and I think it’s partial insurance for in case the team decides to trade Isaiah Wynn, who has been named in some trade rumors.

Marcus Cannon may not be the player he once was for the Patriots, but he knows the team up and down and could easily fill in for a few games here and there if needed.  He’s a 6’6″, 335lb mountain of a man with 34 inch arms.

He’s also a freakish athlete with quick feet and plays with a mean streak.  I think we may end up seeing Marcus Cannon in the starting lineup for New England at some point during the season.  The 34 year old likely has a couple good years left, and could help keep Mac Jones clean in 2022.
